Smart Door Locks In Kenya

Keys get lost, copied and shared. Smart locks replace them with fingerprints, PIN codes, cards and phones, and record who entered and when. This guide explains the types, uses, door materials and working principles, so you can choose the right lock for your property in Kenya. Get a quote

What is a smart lock?

A smart lock is an electronic door lock. Instead of relying only on a metal key, it checks a digital credential such as a fingerprint, PIN, access card, phone or face, and then moves the bolt for you. Many models also keep an audit log of every entry and allow you to add or remove users without changing the lock .

In Kenya, demand is growing across Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu and other towns. Landlords want to stop key duplication. Homeowners want easier family access. Hotels, serviced apartments and short-stay hosts want faster check-in and better control over rooms while avoiding the complexity of Biometric Access Control Systems.

Types of smart locks

Fingerprint locks

Open with a registered fingerprint. Fast, and nothing to carry or forget. Popular for main doors and bedrooms.

Keypad (PIN code) locks

Open with a numeric code. Easy to share with a cleaner or visitor and cancel later.

RFID card and key fob locks

Open with a card or tag held near the reader. The standard choice for offices, hotels and apartment blocks.

Bluetooth and Wi-Fi (app) locks

Controlled from a phone. Allow remote unlocking, time-limited guest access and activity alerts.

Facial recognition locks

Open by recognising a registered face. Suited to premium homes and controlled-entry areas.

Hotel RFID locks

Designed for guest rooms. Cards or mobile keys are issued per stay and expire at check-out.

Electric strikes and magnetic locks

Control an existing door through a reader or biometric terminal. Often used on glass, office and gate-side doors.

Multi-method locks

Combine fingerprint, PIN, card, app and a backup key in one unit. A flexible option for homes.

How smart locks work

Every smart lock follows the same simple sequence:

  1. Credential presented. You touch the fingerprint reader, enter a PIN, tap a card or use the app.
  2. Verification. The lock’s controller compares the credential with the users stored in its memory, or with a central system.
  3. Action. If it matches, a small motor or solenoid retracts the bolt or releases the latch. If not, the door stays locked and the attempt may be logged.
  4. Record. The lock stores the event, such as the user, time and method, for review.

Power. Most smart locks run on batteries and warn you when they are low. Many also have a backup key or an emergency power point. Locks that control electric strikes or magnetic locks are usually powered from a mains-fed power supply with battery backup.

Fail-safe and fail-secure. A fail-secure lock stays locked if power is lost, which suits security doors. A fail-safe lock unlocks if power is lost, which is often required on fire exit routes. The right choice depends on the door’s purpose and local fire safety requirements.

Connectivity. Standalone locks store users on the device. Networked locks connect to software, so an administrator can manage many doors from one place. This is how hotels and larger buildings run them.

Smart locks by door type

Swing doors

Most homes and hotel rooms have swing doors, and this is where smart locks are most common. Options include smart deadbolts, mortise-type locks and retrofit units that replace the existing handle set. Check the door thickness and the lock body size before you buy.

Sliding doors

Sliding doors on patios, balconies and shopfronts need slim locks that fit narrow frames. Common solutions are sliding-door smart locks with a hook bolt, and hook-type electric locks linked to a keypad, card reader or fingerprint terminal. Make sure the door tracks and frame are well aligned, since the lock can only work as well as the door closes.

Double doors and gates

Double doors usually need a lock on the active leaf and bolts on the passive leaf. Pedestrian gates can use weather-rated keypad or card readers. For vehicle gates, see our swing and slide gate automation.

Internal, office and server-room doors

Offices often combine smart locks with biometric access control, so each staff member opens only the areas they are cleared for.

Cabinets, lockers and safes

Smaller smart locks are available for cupboards, storerooms and lockers, which helps control access to valuables, files and stock.

Smart locks by door material

Material Suitable lock types Installation notes
Wood Smart deadbolts, mortise locks, rim locks, retrofit handle sets The easiest material to fit. Doors must be thick enough for the lock body. Hollow-core interior doors may need reinforcement.
Steel Mortise smart locks, deadbolts, strike-based systems Strong and secure, but cut-outs must be precise. Fire-rated steel doors should only be modified as the manufacturer allows.
Aluminium Slim-frame smart locks, sliding-door hook locks, strikes Narrow frames limit lock size. Choose models made for aluminium profiles and confirm the profile width first.
Plain (frameless) glass Patch-fitting locks, glass-clamp locks, electromagnetic locks Glass cannot be drilled on site like wood. Fixings must suit the glass thickness and type. Use a qualified installer.

Door condition matters as much as the lock. A warped, loose or poorly hung door will wear out any lock early, so a site survey includes the frame, hinges and alignment.

Smart locks for homes and apartments

  • No lost-key worries. Remove a lost card or code immediately.
  • Controlled access. Give domestic staff, drivers or contractors codes that work only at set times.
  • Family convenience. Children and elderly relatives can enter without carrying keys.
  • Short-stay rentals. Issue a unique code per guest for self check-in.
  • Estates and apartment blocks. Combine unit locks with intercom systems and alarm systems for layered protection.

Smart locks for hotels and guest houses

Hotels need locks that are quick for guests and easy for staff to manage. Hotel-grade systems typically offer:

  • Card or mobile keys issued at reception for each stay, and expired automatically at check-out.
  • Staff access levels for housekeeping, maintenance and management, with master credentials.
  • Audit trails that show who entered which room and when, useful for guest complaints and loss investigations.
  • Software management from a front-desk computer, with some systems linking to property management software.
  • Emergency override so staff and rescue teams can open doors during an incident.
  • Lost-card control. A lost card is cancelled by issuing a new one, without changing the lock.

Hotels often add fire safety systems, lift access control and back-of-house staff attendance systems, and bring them together as an integrated security system.

How to choose the right smart lock

  1. Know your door. Note whether it swings or slides, and its material, thickness and condition.
  2. Match the method to the users. Fingerprints suit families. Cards suit hotels and offices. Codes suit short-term visitors.
  3. Plan for power cuts. Confirm battery life, low-battery alerts and a backup entry method.
  4. Think about scale. One door needs a standalone lock. Many doors need central management.
  5. Check support. Ask about warranty, spare parts, training and local technical help before you buy.
  6. Use a professional installer. Correct fitting and programming affect both security and lock life.

Frequently asked questions

What is a smart lock?

A smart lock is an electronic door lock that opens with a fingerprint, PIN, card, phone or face instead of, or alongside, a traditional key.

How much do smart locks cost in Kenya?

Prices vary widely by lock type, brand, door type and features. A basic home keypad lock costs far less than a hotel system with software and many doors. A site survey is the most reliable way to get an accurate quotation.

Do smart locks work during a power outage?

Most run on batteries, so they keep working when mains power fails. They give low-battery warnings, and most have a backup key or an emergency power point.

Can smart locks be installed on glass doors?

Yes. Frameless glass doors use patch-fitting locks, glass-clamp locks or electromagnetic locks, depending on whether the door swings or slides. A trained installer should fit them.

Can I fit a smart lock to my existing door?

Often yes. A survey checks the door thickness, material, frame and current lock body to confirm which models fit.

Are smart locks safe from hacking?

Reputable locks use encrypted communication and limit incorrect attempts. Good practice also matters: change default codes, remove old users, keep firmware updated and avoid sharing admin access.

What happens if I lose my card, phone or code?

You cancel that credential and issue a new one. The lock itself does not need to be replaced or re-keyed.

Which smart lock is best for a hotel?

RFID card or mobile-key locks are the usual choice. They allow keys to be issued, expired and audited per guest and per room, and they let staff manage many doors from one system.

Which smart lock is best for a home?

A multi-method lock combining fingerprint, PIN and a backup key suits most families. Add app control if you want remote access or guest codes.

Can one system manage many doors?

Yes. Networked locks and access control software can manage hundreds of users and doors, and can link to attendance, intercom and alarm systems.

Can smart locks be used on fire exits?

They can, but the lock must release safely in an emergency and follow fire safety rules. Always agree the design with your installer and fire safety adviser.

Do you offer installation and support in Kenya?

Yes. Solutions UNLIMITED handles consultation, supply, installation, training and after-sales support in Nairobi and across Kenya.
